Sunrises and Sunsets is a series of acrylic paintings on sheets of rigid foam insulation. The insulation's color provides the basis of the composition. These natural phenomena are depicted in an intentionally raw take on modernist representation. The images refuse a clear resolution between illusionistic and abstract space and wonder aloud: How do these symbols of natural phenomena translate the experience of nature? The use of foam as painting support seeks an alternative to traditional canvas or panel, calling into question the preciousness of art objects, the agreed standards of quality and the long-term environmental impacts of art making.
